EMPLOY Wood Machine Operators set up, operate, or tend woodworking machines, such as drill presses, lathes, shapers, routers, sanders, planers, and wood nailing machines.
EMPLOY participants can perform some or all of these functions:
- Examine drawings and work orders to determine characteristics of finished item, materials to be used, and machine setup requirements
- Examine blueprints, drawings, or samples to determine size, type, and setting of machine tools, stops, jigs, and guides to use
- Examine raw wood stock for defects and to ensure conformity to size and other specification standards
- Install and adjust blades, cutter heads, boring bits, or sanding belts in machines, according to work piece, machine function, and specification
- Operate equipment to bore, shape, smooth, shave, chip, slice or cut wood stock
- Start and operate machine to engage hydraulic lift to press wood stock into desired form
- Monitor operation of automatic machines and make adjustments as needed to correct problems and ensure conformance to specifications
- Examine work piece visually, by touch, or using equipment for smoothness, shape, angle, depth-of-cut and conformity to specifications so product meets desired standards
- Re-adjust and re-align guides of sanding, cutting, or boring machines to correct defects in finished product
- Mark or otherwise identify completed and inspected work piece
- Hand stack on pallet or conveyor or control hoist to remove part or product from workstation
