Join or reinforce articles such as garments, books, and mattresses
EMPLOY Hand Sewers sew, join, reinforce, or finish, usually with needle and thread, a variety of manufactured items, including weavers and stitchers.

EMPLOY participants can perform some or all of these functions:

  • Draw and cut patterns according to specifications
  • Select thread, twine, cord, or yarn and thread needles
  • Wax thread
  • Soften leather or shoe material
  • Measure and align parts, fasteners, or trimmings, following seams, edges, or markings on parts
  • Fold, twist, stretch, or drape material and secure article in preparation for sewing
  • Tie, knit, weave or knot ribbon, yarn or decorative materials
  • Attach trimmings and labels
  • Sew using various types of stitches such as felling, tacking, basting, embroidery, and fagoting
  • Trim excess threads or edges
  • Smooth seam with heated iron, flat bone or rubbing stick
