EMPLOY Printing Press Operators operate or tend various types of printing machines, such as offset lithographic presses, letter or letterset presses to produce and finish printed products on paper or other.

EMPLOY participants can perform some or all of these functions:

  • Review work order to determine ink, stock and equipment needed for production
  • Set and adjust speed, temperature, ink flow, and position and pressure tolerances of press
  • Select and install printing plates, rollers, screens, stencils, type, die, and cylinders in machine
    according to specifications
  • Load, position and adjust materials on holding, loading and feeding mechanisms of press
  • Pour or spread paint, ink, color compounds
  • Blend and test paint, inks, stains and solvents according to type of material being printed and
    work order specifications
  • Monitor feeding, printing and racking processes of press to maintain specified operating levels and detect malfunctions
  • Remove printed materials from press, using hand truck, electric lift or hoist, and transport them to drying, storage or finishing areas
  • Inspect and examine printed products for clarity, color accuracy, conformance to specifications and defects
  • Discard or correct misprinted material using ink eradicators or solvents
  • Pack and label cartons, boxes or bins of finished products
  • Dismantle and reassemble printing unit or parts to repair, maintain or adjust machine
  • Clean and lubricate printing machine and components (e.g., rollers, screens, typesetting, reservoirs)
  • Monitor and control operation of auxiliary equipment, such as cutters, folders, drying ovens and sanders to assemble and finish product
  • Direct and monitor activities of workers feeding, inspecting and tending printing machines and
    materials
  • Keep daily time and materials usage reports and records identifying information printed on manufactured products and parts
