Package canned foods
EMPLOY Packaging Machine Operators operate or tend machines to prepare industrial or consumer products for storage or shipment, including cannery workers who pack food products. They also operate or tend hoists or winches to lift and pull loads using power-operated cable equipment.

EMPLOY participants can perform some or all of these functions:

  • Tend or operate machine that packages product
  • Operate mechanism to cut filler product or packaging material
  • Adjust machine tension, pressure and components according to size or processing angle of product
  • Remove finished packaged items from machine and separate rejected items
  • Observe machine operations to ensure quality, conformity and standards
  • Attach identification labels to finished packaged items
  • Stack finished packaged items or pack items in cartons or containers
  • Count and record finished and rejected packaged items
  • Secure finished packaged items by hand tying, sewing, or attaching fastener
  • Test and evaluate product and verify product weight or measurement to ensure quality
    standards
  • Stock packaging material for machine processing
  • Stock product for packaging or filling machine operation
  • Inspect and remove defective product and packaging material
  • Operate equipment, such as hoist, winch, or hydraulic boom, to lift and pull
  • Move or reposition hoists, winches, loads, and materials, manually or using equipment
    and machines such as trucks, cars, and hand trucks
  • Tend auxiliary equipment, such as jacks, slings, cables, or stop blocks, to facilitate moving items or materials for further processing
  • Select loads or materials according to weight and size specifications
  • Observe equipment gauges, indicators, and hand signals to verify depth of materials, instruments, or position of load
  • Start engine of hoist or winch to move loads or materials, using controls such as levers, pedals, and buttons
