EMPLOY Laundry Workers operate or tend washing machines to wash industrial or household articles.
EMPLOY participants can perform some or all of these functions:
- Examine and sort articles to be cleaned into lots, according to color, fabric, dirt content, and cleaning technique required
- Examine articles to identify fabric and original dye by sight, touch or by testing with fire or chemical reagent
- Match sample color, applying knowledge of bleaching agent and dye properties, and type, construction, condition and color of article
- Measure, mix and add detergents, dyes, bleach, starch, oils, acids and other solutions and chemicals following formulas to clean, color, dry, or stiffen articles
- Spray steam, water, or air over spot to flush out chemicals, dry material, raise nap, or brighten color
- Mix bleaching agent in vats and soak material until it is bleached
- Clean fabric using vacuum or air hose
- Inspect spots to ascertain composition and select solvent
- Apply chemicals to neutralize effect of solvents
- Immerse article in dye solution or rotary-drum or paddle dyeing machine
- Apply dye to article, using spray gun, electrically rotated brush, or hand brush
- Rinse article to remove excess dye and to fix colors
- Operate and regulate washer, dry cleaner, drier, and extractor
- Tend and regulate equipment that fumigates and removes foreign matter from furs
- Wash, dry clean or glaze delicate articles or fur garment
- Mend and sew articles, using hand stitching, adhesive patch, or power sewing machine
- Iron or press articles, fabrics, and furs, using hand iron or pressing machine
- Clean machine filters and lubricates equipment
- Start pumps to operate distilling system to reclaim dry cleaning solvents
