EMPLOY Carpenters perform a variety of tasks requiring a limited knowledge of carpentry,
such as applying siding and weatherboard to building exteriors or assembling and erecting
prefabricated buildings.
EMPLOY participants can perform some or all of these functions:
- Study blueprints, specification sheets, and drawings to determine style and type of window or wall panel required
- Examine wood surfaces for defects, such as nicks, cracks, or blisters
- Repair or replace defective locks, hinges, cranks, and pieces of wood, using glue, hand tools, and power tools
- Apply stain, paint or crayons to defects and filter to touch up the repaired area
- Move panel section to other work stations or to storage or shipping area, using electric hoist
- Fill cracks, seams, depressions, and nail holes
- Measure cut materials to determine conformance to specifications
- Realign windows and screens to fit casements and oil moving parts
- Measure and mark location of studs, leaders, and receptacle openings
- Cut sidings and moldings, sections of weatherboard, openings in sheetrock, and lumber
- Lay out and align materials on worktable or in assembly jig according to specified instructions
- Remove surface defects, using knife, scraper, wet sponge, electric iron, and sanding tools
- Trim overlapping edges of wood, weatherboard, using portable router or power saw, and
hand tools
- Install prefabricated windows and doors, insulation, wall, ceiling and floor panels or siding, using adhesives, hoists, hand tools, and power tools
- Align and fasten materials together, using hand tools and power tools, to form building or bracing
