JoAnn Brown and Michael Hreha recently attended the Defendant Offender Workforce Development Conference (DOWD) in San Francisco, CA. Along with attending various workshops and seminars on best practices and strategies for pre and post-release employment services; they were presenters at the conference, which highlighted the EMPLOY Program service delivery methods. The presentation focused on EMPLOY’s unique 3-step model, employer
development and evaluation results. The model was well received and generated interest from staff on the federal level in corrections. Additionally, this was a great opportunity to generate new ideas to build on service delivery, to continue to prove the success of the EMPLOY Program, and to become more recognized on a national level for being an innovative employment service model.

Climbing the Corporate Ladder
On a recent visit to a local employer who had hired an EMPLOY participant in the past, EMPLOY’s Job Developer discovered that the participant was now the general manager!  The participant found employment shortly after getting released, starting as a laborer operating various industrial laundry machines. A few short months afterwards, he was promoted to a management position. Now, almost two years later, not only is he still with the same company, he is the general manager and oversees all of the operations for the facility.  Through his hard work and determination to succeed on the job, he was able to climb the corporate ladder!
